The local population exhibits diversity in education, employment, income levels, and to some degree is racially mixed. Eighty-five percent of the local population has graduated from high school. Of these, 74.6% hold Bachelor’s degrees and almost 11% hold post-graduate degrees. Of the 2,188 households in Parkton, the median household income is $67,994 ($30,850 per capita), which suggests that the majority of households are dual earners. Most people commute out of the Parkton area to employment centers in Hunt Valley, Towson, Baltimore City, and beyond. Northern Baltimore County has an excellent school system. Public schools serving the Parkton area include 5th and 7th Districts, Prettyboy and Sparks Elementary, Hereford Middle, and Hereford High Schools. There are numerous independent and churchaffiliated independent schools in the area, including several schools affiliated with the Episcopal Church (St. James’ Academy, St. Timothy’s School, St. Paul’s School for Boys and St. Paul’s School for Girls). There are many colleges and universities in the greater-Baltimore area. Some of these colleges are Goucher College, Johns Hopkins University, Towson University, University of Maryland campuses, Loyola College, Maryland Institute College of Art and various community colleges. The Peabody Conservatory of Music is in the Mt. Vernon area in Baltimore City near the Walters Art Museum. The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis is about 30 minutes from downtown Baltimore. There are other colleges and universities within a few hours drive located in other Maryland counties, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Nearby Hereford hosts two pharmacies, Graul's a full-service grocery store, branch library, cleaners, florist, hardware store, and other specialty establishments. Major nearby shopping centers are located north in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, and south in Hunt Valley, (which includes Wegmans Grocery Store) Our health care system boasts three major hospital centers located within 25 minutes of Parkton. St. Joseph’s Medical Center and Greater Baltimore Medical Center are south of Parkton in Towson, MD. Towson is also the home to Shepard Pratt Hospital which is a nationally recognized psychiatric facility. York Hospital is a large community hospital north of Parkton in York, PA. Baltimore City is home to Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Maryland Hospital and numerous other health care facilities. The Parkton region offers many opportunities for recreation in the adjacent Gunpowder State Park and Prettyboy Reservoir areas. Hunting, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, running, hiking, and exploring nature provide a wide variety of activities.
There are many great dining establishments very close to Calder Estates like Patricia Della, Soup'R Natural Restaurant, Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Friendly Farm Restaurant, The Milton Inn, Manor Tavern, The Oregon Grille, Andy Nelson's, Greystone Grill just to name a few. Woodhall Wine Cellars in Parkton just down the road established in 1983 as a boutique family winery produces fine table wine for the Mid-Atlantic region. Visit their tasting room or attend a fun event. Not to mention the Parkton area is surrounded with high quality Wineries, just look at the map below for a few.
